ETA urgent call-out for April production

Edinburgh Theatre Arts has put out an urgent cast call for an actor with the playing age of 20 – 40 years old to play the role of Acaste in its April 2024 production of The Misanthrope.

This amateur production runs from Monday 8 to Saturday 13 April 2024, including a 1pm performance on Saturday 13. The critical rehearsal period is during the Easter Holidays, the week before the production.

This is Roger McGough’s adaptation from Molière, which sees Alceste, the protagonist and misanthrope of the title, speaking in prose with the rest of the cast speaking largely in verse.

In the Misanthrope, poet Alceste is disgusted with French society where powdered fops gossip in code and bejewelled coquettes whisper behind fans. He embarks on a one-man crusade against fakery, frippery and forked tongues.

But could Célimène, the woman he adores, be the worst culprit of them all? And in this rarefied world will his revolution prove merely revolting?

The role needing to be cast is Acaste, who is described as: “A young, pompous marquis who believes he is deserving of Célimène’s love.”

Anyone interested in taking on the role should contact the director, John McLinden at johnmclinden@btinternet.com as a matter of urgency.
