FCT to stage Loserville for April show

Forth Children’s Theatre has put out an open casting call for its junior production of Loserville which will play Edinburgh Academy in April 2018.

Auditions will be on Sunday 17 December at Inverleith Rugby Club on Arboretum Road, running from 10am to 6pm. They are open to youngsters who will be aged 10 or over and 18 or under at the start of show week.

Loserville is based on Ticket Out of Loserville – an album by James Bourne’s second band, Son of Dork. It’s set in seventies America and follows the life of the biggest geek you’ll meet, Michael Dork, in his high school years where he comes across different social groups, love and technology.

Holly Manson has just moved school and aspires to be the first female astronaut, and this is where Michael’s life changes.

Bourne and Elliot Davis originally created the show for Youth Music Theatre in 2009. A production opened at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2012, transferring to London’s Garrick Theatre the same year.

The creative team behind the FCT production are all one-time cast members of the company. Alex Gordon will be directing with choreography from Kirsten MacDonald and musical direction from, Eilidh Park.

energy and vibrancy

The trio say that they are looking a cast that can “bring energy and vibrancy and inject it into the musical’s fantastic soundtrack”, which is a huge opportunity to show off the talents of the cast.

Speaking of his reason for wanting to direct Loserville, Gordon told Æ: “I remember being in London back in 2012 and walking past the Garrick Theatre where it was performed and being so intrigued about it from the pictures.

“From then I have been gripped by the soundtrack and the energy around the show; it is so much fun and the technical possibilities that surround the show excite me.”

The audition day will consist of singing, dancing and acting workshops, with a group audition in front of the directing team. There is no need to prepare anything in advance. Some people may be called back, in which case the latest finish would be 6pm, but auditionees are free to leave after their slot.

Parents of auditionees should ensure they can be contacted by their child as they may well finish earlier in the afternoon. Auditionees should wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and take lunch with them as there will not be time to get anything during the day.

Anyone wishing to join up for an audition should email: fctloserville@gmail.com.
