U3A inspired show for Netherbow

(There Are) No Strangers Here, a new play by four members of the Leith-based Citadel writers is set to debut this Friday 9 September 2022 for three performances only at the Netherbow Theatre in the Scottish Storytelling Centre.

The script is from Hilary Spiers, Laure Paterson, Susan Chaney and Richard Peoples, writing under the name of One Foot in the Future. All are connected to the Citadel Arts Group and all but Peoples contributed scenes to Leithers Live – the Custom House Play.

Director Mark Kydd told Æ: “The play deals with hot-button topics of climate change and mass displacement caused by extreme weather events, as well as challenging common misconceptions about older people.”

In a small Scottish town, two climate refugees are billeted on Agnes and Danny, a retired couple. Wrestling with different customs and philosophies, all four find new purpose and friendship. Nothing will ever be the same again.

The show stars Eve Dagba, Firas Ibrahim, Isabella Jarrett and Paul Wilson. Beside Kydd’s direction, sound and lighting design are by Roddy Simpson with original music composed by Laure Paterson.

Inspiration and support to write a piece about the continuing usefulness of older or retired people to society came from the University of the Third Age (U3A).
