Rebus casting
Cathy Tyson joins Rebus cast as Siobhan
Cathy Tyson and John Stahl are to join Charles Lawson in the first Rebus play, Long Shadows, which is touring to the King’s for a week this October 2018.
Tyson will be taking the role of Rebus’ former colleague, DI Siobhan Clarke, with Stahl as his nemesis, Big Ger Cafferty, in a script adapted by Rona Munro from a new story written exclusively for the stage by Ian Rankin.
With Lawson previously announced as Rebus, Rankin Tweeted “Got to say – amazing cast for Rebus’s first adventure on the stage”. He also revealed that the new scrip will feature “New and old villains! Cafferty front and centre…”
In the production, which is directed by Roxana Silbert for Birmingham Rep, Rankin’s long running fictional Detective Inspector John Rebus is retired, as he is in the most recent novels, but the shadows of his former life still follow him through the streets of Edinburgh.
Whisky helped but now he’s denying himself that pleasure. But when the daughter of a murder victim appears outside his flat, he’s back on the case and off the wagon.
This is not Rankin’s first foray into theatre. His Dark Road played the Lyceum five years ago, when Æ carried a series of blogs from Jo Rush, who was assistant director on the production.
capable hands
This time, however, Rankin is leaving the script work in the more than capable hands of Rona Munro, who has a hefty catalogue of plays for theatre, radio and TV to her credit, including The James Plays, Bold Girls and Iron as well as writing for Doctor Who.
In Long Shadows, Rebus will need help from his ex-colleagues – although one of them is already looking for him. DI Siobhan Clarke was Rebus’ greatest ally on the force but is worried that his past actions may stop them finally convicting a dangerous killer. Soon Rebus is caught between two cases and can only turn to one person to help him – the man he spent his career trying to arrest.
Charles Lawson is best known for playing the iconic role of Jim McDonald in Coronation Street since 1989. Cathy Tyson who won the Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Mona Lisa has a long string of big credits in film, TV and theatre to her name.
John Stahl is best known for playing the recurring character of Quinn on the second season of Being Human and Rickard Karstark in Game of Thrones. Recent Edinburgh theatre roles include A Winter’s Tale (Edinburgh Lyceum 2017), The James Plays (National Theatre of Scotland 2016) and Rapture Theatre’s 2014 tour of Uncle Varick.
The tour of Rebus: Long Shadows opens in Birmingham on September 20, arriving in Edinburgh on Monday October 8 and tours through to November 17, when it ends up in Aberdeen.
