Tae the Pub (in yer front room) with VPT!

If you are missing the pub, then Village Pub Theatre, the scrip-in-hand playwright-run theatre company, has the answer this Friday 10 April 2020, when it hosts a live, interactive Virtual Pub Theatre on Zoom.

This new way of experiencing the Village Pub Theatre will, like all VPT events, feature a selection of short plays, all written over a short time-frame in response to a given provocation and then performed script-in-hand after brief rehearsals on the day.

Seven writers are still busily squireling away on their their short plays “in celebration of the public house”, the provocation for the evening. The actors – as yet unconfirmed – will be directed by VPT members James Ley and Sophie Good, who will also be providing their own short scripts.

The pair are being joined on script writing duties by Grace Cleary, Sue Gyford, Sylvia Dow, Giles Conisbee and Jill Franklin.

Good and Ley told Æ: “We hope this will help to provide a much needed sense of community amongst artists and our audience. A way to relax and unwind in the lead up to Easter weekend.”

home baking

While VPT can’t provide the usual home baking, or even a bar (you’re on your own on that front!) they will be facilitating several elements of the Zoom-cast to ensure that there is real audience interaction and a sense of the live event.

“We hope it will be a fun evening” say Good and Ley. “We will be introducing a special ‘interval’ area where you can break into smaller groups for a wee drink and a chat at half time.

“We’ll also be encouraging our audience to interact as much as possible by creating signs for laughter/shouting/coughing etc to avoid interfering with the sound during performances – and after each play we will have time for applause and a bit of chat.”

response

VPT will not be charging admission but has created a justgiving page so those audience members able to do so can drop a few virtual quid in the pot – in lieu of the usual £3 ticket price – to be shared among the artists involved who have lost income in the current situation.

Good and Ley add: “This is our first event and we are really learning a bit as we go on how it might work; but the response from writers and actors wanting to be involved has been amazing and we hope to do a few more once we’ve launched!”

The event will be live on Zoom on Friday at 8pm. Details of how to join the Zoom chat will be posted in Friday on the event Facebook Page and, for those who don’t use Facebook, on VPT’s Twitter:@PubTheatre.
