Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella November 2024

Edinburgh amateur company Threepenny Theatricals is stepping into musical theatre for its seventh outing, in November 2024, when it will stage Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella at the Church Hill Theatre.

The company has issued an early open call for four of the principal roles for the show, with auditions on Sunday 8 October 2023. A further call for members of the chorus will be made at a future date.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella will play the Church Hill Theatre in November 2024

This is the full blown musical theatre production of Cinderella, based on Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical which began life as a television vehicle for Julie Andrews in 1957. Having gone through several iterations over the years, this is the Broadway 2013 version with a book by Douglas Carter Beane.

Based on the original French fairy tale by Charles Perrault, this romantic musical adaptation has all the much-loved ingredients of the original: A pumpkin coach, glass slippers, a fairy godmother, a masked ball and the rest.

It is all bound together by the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s music and lyrics, with Beane’s Tony-nominated book complementing their themes with a twenty-first-century sensibility, giving the musical new characters, plot twists, and revelatory moments that hark back to the Perrault version.

score

The score includes familiar songs from the television versions – In My Own Little Corner, Impossible, A Lovely Night, and Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful‘ – along with songs from the “trunk”, including Now is the Time, cut from South Pacific, and Me, who am I, cut from Me and Juliet.

The Threepenny Theatricals production will be directed by Fiona Main and Simon Boothroyd, with musical director David Lyle. Mike Pendlowski and Neil French will be on lighting and sound design respectively, with other creative roles yet to be announced.

The company has cast all but four of the principal roles in this amateur production. The remaining roles are all substantial.

Madame (Mezzo/Alto) Playing age: 40s – 50s.
Ella’s selfish stepmother. The epitome of vanity and fashion. A ravenous social climber who values wealth, status, and material possessions above all else. Unapologetically dismissive and sometimes cruel, Madame schemes her way up the social ladder.

Gabrielle (Mezzo) Playing age: 20s – 30s.
Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Encouraged by her mother and sister to value material wealth and social status, she unenthusiastically joins them in their abrasive behaviour. Quietly passionate, empathetic, and witty, she is drawn to Ella and Jean-Michel. Ironically aware that she doesn’t fit in.

Jean-Michel (Tenor). Playing age: 20s – 30s.
A feisty, passionate peasant determined to make a change for the starving class. Impetuous. A firebrand, but lacks authority and isn’t taken seriously as a revolutionary. He has a crush on Gabrielle, though their courtship is forbidden because they are from different social classes.

Lord Pinkleton (Tenor) Playing age: any.
The Lord Chancellor’s right-hand man. Announces royal balls, banquets and even the weather to the villagers. A heavier singing role rather than speaking role will still need to make much of the character.

Anyone interested in auditioning for any of these roles should email auditons@threepenny-theatricals.org by Friday 6 October 2023, detailing the part they would like to audition for. This will allow 3dT to send you the relevant libretto and musical items to allow you to prepare, and allocate you an audition time.

Potential auditionees should also be aware of the production schedule, with rehearsals starting in April 2024. Full details of which are on the 3dT website.
